Amazon’s overall shipping costs have ballooned in recent years as the company aims to speed up delivery, both with products purchased on Amazon.com and via Prime Now, such as Whole Foods orders. During Q3, Amazon spent a whopping .6 billion globally on shipping, up 46 percent year-over-year, and 7 million more than what the company spent in the 2018 holiday quarter.

Among international retailers, Carrefour saw its market share recover on a quarterly basis as it opened 30 small format neighborhood stores under the name "Easy Carrefour" to appeal to younger shoppers who want convenience and a relevant mix of merchandise.

Amazon’s other food-related businesses include Whole Foods grocery delivery; AmazonFresh; and AmazonFresh Pickup. The company surprisingly shut down its restaurant delivery business last month. It entered the brick-and-mortar retail space in 2015, two decades after the e-commerce behemoth originally launched.

Amazon’s stock hit an all-time high today, closing at 8.43 per share, after a Wall Street analyst upgraded the company’s stock, saying that investors have been underestimating Amazon’s global network of distribution centers.

Amid rising tides of protectionism and unilateralism, the move highlighted China's resolution to liberalize its economy, and with top leaders' repeated promise of wider opening-up on various occasions, the world can count on the country to continue to walk the talk, analysts said.
